PLC IO Type - Digital versus Discrete

I work with PLCs a lot and I am curious what the differences are between Digital IO and Discrete IO in the PLC world. Is there anyone that would be able to explain that in a relatively simple manner?

Generally they refer to the same thing with 'discrete' being the more accurate. To be technical all I/O are digital (numbers / binary) on the PLC side. The discrete/analog terminology refers to the signals on the field side of the module.
